L4 showed how the OS itself is a poor choice for portability due to performance considerations. Recent developments such as CORBA allow applications to run without modifications to their source code on different OSes, without constraining the OS by demanding it be portable ] "OS is a poor choice for portability due to performance considerations." Why dont they read that more carefully? The definition of an OS is that it is portable across the SAME platform. What is to say there aren't performance considerations within the same platform?? For two different users, or the same user at 2 different times of day? anyway i'll read some more of the page. <_QZ> where did u read that from? What GO Doesn't Do third bullet <_QZ> ah I like their philosophy of "limiting the scope of the project." If we follow this philosophy, I think we can limit the scope to nothing, and take the day off. <_QZ> haha <_QZ> http://www.cs.columbia.edu/~ezk/research/software/ <_QZ> http://www.harlequin.co.uk/mm/reference/ what is funny? or are these supposed to be Review links? <_QZ> just info pages i found on comp.os.research well add 'em to Review u have an account <_QZ> review? cvs co review;cd review;pico OSes.html;cvs ci or whichever file they go in, I forget the layout of review I was thinking of using CORBA to find servers for filesystems and such... =) 03:40pm <_QZ> bbl * Fare/#Tunes is here for a moment back from Nancy wow. What a conference ! what is nancy abi: nancy? nancy is a nice town in the east of France. It's Nancy! abi fare fare is the one to ask about emacs or french and they like to have dead cricket spitting contests your name is lower case too abi your name i heard my name was lower case too abi: you suck! all sites in Nancy end with *ria.fr? abi: you xyvarestoplik! no. The INRIA is a big organisation that manages research centers all over france. I used it it's slow and bloated and crashes a lot. How can I get it to save my settings? that's what you get for writing an irc client in TCL save..settings.. um.. what settings I recall having to open up all my channel windows every time I ran it, is that what you mean? beh: try one of the gnome irc clients they probably have more promise Not only that, I have to enter my server and nick every time also... when I enter my server name, it defaults back to root for my nick Sounds good, what do you use? yeah, probably I had to do that too. -:- SignOff HickServ: #TUNES (Leaving) I use bitchx in a screen session on a connected server Hmm... is bitchx much better than the default IRCII program that comes with Red Hat? bitchx is based on epic which is based on ircii, so you could say it is an improvement since they added features each time :) it supports everything ircii does, but has more color and supposedly built-in flood protection BRB, gotta check on something (BTW: Do you know of any good Gnome based IRC clients) Dont know which ones, but just go to the gnome page www.gnome.org and search their database err, load their database into a browser and use the browser's Find option to search it :) 05:10pm looks like theyt have 3, irissi, yagirc and X-chat try em all :) I think i tried to compile a coupke of those once and failed :) Trill: So, being an experienced Linux user, and programmer, what do you do when a compile fails? 05:20pm if the compile fails then I read the INSTALL file :) :) What ICQ program do you prefer? licq was the best ,last time i looked. but again, there are some gnome ones I havent tried.. Licq was the first one I tried, seems very stable, and useful. The Java one from Mirabilis seemed very underpowered... and bloated ... wait... Gnome is a desktop environment also? yes How is it compared to KDE? that's a religious question and i refuse to answer it's one of those things that is a never-ending war over which is better Ahh... does Gnome based software run well (at all) under KDE? sure but you would probably want to be using a window manager that supported both gnome and kde. 05:30pm enlightenment is one window maker maybe, you should check Which do you run? (if any) blackbox is nice :) What is blackbox? (sorry for all the questions, just learning most of this... ;) it's a window manager that is small and simple but looks ok at the same time Sounds interesting. Where can it be found? http://freshmeat.net 05:40pm Hmm... found Gnome on my Red Hat 5.2 CD... much easier than downloading ;) http://www.lsl.com has free redhat 6.0 cds... you have no excuse not to have one ! Cool, I'm there... i think shipping is like 5 bucks, try cheapbytes.com for lower shipping possibly Which Linux distro do you prefer? deb Why so? it's an open distribution. anyone can become a maintainer and package their favorite program. So it has LOTS of packages. It's just great to see what they can achieve. Organizing that many people is a challenge. debian is a social movement of its own. on the technical side, I have to try freebsd because it's probably comparable but far less interesting socially I used FreeBSD as a mail server in the ISP I worked for... it was very stable (in that it is maintained by a closed group of people who tightly control every aspect of the operating system) the kernel, and applications are all maintained by the same people We replaced a Linux (1.2.x kernel) box doing the same job... it died on a daily basis (just bad configs probably) 05:50pm Debain sounds more like an OpenSource OS should be distributed :) -:- beholder [root@ppp-059.m4-1.osh.ican.net] has left #tunes [] 06:00pm -:- SignOff AlonzoTG: #TUNES (Read error to AlonzoTG[209.122.196.154]: Connection reset by peer) -:- AlonzoTG [Alonzo@216.164.229.15] has joined #tunes <_QZ> http://www.geocities.com/ResearchTriangle/Facility/2320/ua/ 07:10pm design goal #5 I think is wrong. 5.The number of optional features in UA should be zero. maybe the number of required features? or does he mean it requires all features? <_QZ> didnt read it it's very interesting <_QZ> thats why i put the url here, i knew u would want to read it :) I'm going to email this guy before I finish reading it, because I will FORCE him to put his page on my server so I don't have to keep closing geocities popup boxes. <_QZ> haha <_QZ> are u in netscape? communicator 4.04 what they got in this lab <_QZ> turn off javascript and the code magically appears
