MIPS? Yes you did. then you have found someone, what's up? Hey wait are you the sub-500 mips dude? =) Well, I want to make a really simple computer using mips. Handheld, and programmable. Needs to have keypad input, LCD output, and a rs232 port. yes I am PIC is ok but the CPU isn't as powerful as I'd like...8051 is better but still has nasty RAM limitations. I'm a RAM hog. =) I was thinking maybe a r3k might be a good starting point. i know enough electronics not to get myself killed...=) well, it would, but you can get better performance w/o raising the price point if you go with the RM5231 What's the price point? how much $$ am I looking at for the HW needed? you could do it for under $300 yeasily perfect. Where could I get the HW needed? after all, that's all that most palmtops are QED makes the CPU, Galileo makes a nice PCI bridge for it, the rest of it, try TI or Sony hmmmmmmmm the r3k is old and very difficult to find control chips for well Any CPU is fine. the newer R4k and R5k series are easier ok price is a definite concern of mine though. I'd like to have a decent amount of RAM -- both flash and volatile if you would do *any* CPU, try a coldfire. I found a chipset for that which would suit your needs and cost you $100 less coldfire...isn't that the 'next generation m68k'? right 02:30pm -:- SignOff ultima: #TUNES (Read error to ultima[user-37kbakk.dialup.mindspring.com]: Connection reset by peer) -:- ultima [ultima@user-37kba1b.dialup.mindspring.com] has joined #Tunes wow my isp sucks. anyway... it's ok I basically have to pay this out of wallet and I'm starting from scratch. ok another good chip to use is the ARM of course if performance isn't an issue, go with the coldfire performance is anissue within bounds the Palm uses one very effectively I don't need anything more powerful than a 486. ok, then the coldfire would suit you ok how would I program it? Does it have builtin OTP ROM or flash or what o? flash on-cpu? no, in the chipset I found for it I'll have to dig it up ok and coldfire is von neumann, no ? yup it's basically the 68k w/ a RISC'd instruction set kinda like what would happen if you took the CISC->RISC stage out of the Pentium CPU and marketed it aka i960 * ultima/#Tunes nods ColdFire eval board for 200$ mmmmmmmmmm the eval board is pretty much all you'd need yeah its kinda pricey i'd need mroe info on it ok Also mediaGX is avail, if you want x86 compatabilkity Well, size is a concern * Downix/#tunes nods how big are these things? about 1.2cm by 1.2 cm they're tiny 02:40pm Er the complete board. the board is large, yes about the size of a micro-AT board a MIPS prototype board is the size of a PCI slot argh see now thats what I need... you need an electronics kit and make your own Also, powering it is a big concern, since its going to have to run off of batteries. well, for that try ARM http://www.arm.com how big? ARM is the most power-efficient CPU I know of w/ any power * ultima/#Tunes nods not sure, I never looked at the size Maybe I ought not have chosen such a large project. Too late. =) At least I have a long time to do it ;) well, I felt the same way once * ultima/#Tunes nods. This could be a lot of fun and I really want to do it. but now I have a near-prototype of my unit done I've spent way too much time with my nose in emacs, its time to whip out the soldering iron! hehe * ultima/#Tunes coughs ARM develop kit is 9k! yup MIPS is $5k SPARC is $100 Doh, what about SPARC? $100 for a developer kit, or 100k? SPARC would work too. $100 for a developer kit Actually, I like SPARC. w0w whats in the developer kit? it's like 4" byt 6" I think The ARM is software and programmers and debuggers and stuff. it's a microSPARC board, a debugger, and gcc w/ Linux Well lets see what I need so far. if I remember right Low power consumption, reasonably small footprint, programmability w/ serial cable preferably, eprom burners be expensive, and most of all, using it must not require an EE Ph.D =) ok hehe The ARM eval board almost fits. the MIPS one does fit I want to learn about electronics and stuff but i am simply not skilled enough to wire a CPU with more than 40 pins. I'd really like an eval board esp one with io pins i can play with 02:50pm hmm ever thought about the 68000? it's slow, but it has only 100 pins, widely spaced out to make it easy to work with 'only 100 pins' he says. 100 pins spaced out widely it isn't hard to work on, trust me ok, have to be going, bbl -:- SignOff Downix: #TUNES ([BX] Have YOU raped a lawn gnome today?) -:- SignOff ultima: #TUNES (Leaving) -:- NetSplit: norton.openprojects.net split from clarke.openprojects.net [02:58pm] -:- BitchX+Deb1an: Press Ctrl-F to see who left Ctrl-E to change to [norton.openprojects.net] -:- Netjoined: norton.openprojects.net clarke.openprojects.net -:- fare [fare@quatramaran.ens.fr] has joined #Tunes -:- eihrul [lee@usr5-ppp145.lvdi.net] has joined #Tunes -:- abi [nef@bespin.dhs.org] has joined #Tunes -:- ServerMode/#Tunes [+o fare] by heinlein.openprojects.net 03:00pm -:- liar [brand@p0wer.qzx.com] has joined #tunes a new version of bochs was released today he is gonna start adding pentium emu to bochs ack! no! is he even going to emulate the f00f bug? haha SUBJ: Enginerds Electrical Engineering: We make the things that make technicians swear 03:20pm -:- SignOff eihrul: #TUNES (Ping timeout for eihrul[usr5-ppp145.lvdi.net]) -:- eihrul [lee@usr5-ppp162.lvdi.net] has joined #tunes -:- hcf [nef@me-portland-us330.javanet.com] has joined #tunes next time yer sick and cant goto work tell em u cant come in cuz u have to have an autopsy 03:50pm no labotomty? -t heh 04:00pm Warning label on a Swedish chain saw: DO NOT ATTEMPT TO STOP CHAIN WITH YOUR HANDS OR GENITALS. umm... interesting they would choose genitals over hand er head i mean :) :) u know those lighters with the long stem used to light bbq's? they have a warning label that says do not use near fire, flame or sparks :) 04:10pm warning label on a Korean kitchen knife: KEEP OUT OF CHILDREN warning label on a bar of Dial soap: DIRECTIONS: USE LIKE REGULAR SOAP 04:20pm -:- Icore [ahvezda@kalypso.cybercom.net] has joined #tunes Back Up My Hard Drive?
