Name me something that's actuially "wrong" about it -:- randobj [randobj@208.215.216.239] has joined #tunes It's not intensional; it allows links to be broken. You may not *like* UNIX, doesn't mean it's wrong. Uhhhhrm binEng: Depends on the file system being used. In classical UFS, yes What's wrong with UNIX In the new JFFS, no, links are dynamic I haven't heard about that, but I doubt textual references remain valid if you e.g. move a file. they do in the newer journaled file systems Traditional file systems. Depends heavily on C. Not intensional. Nowhere near fine-grained enough. ACL-based. Very little support for reflectiveness. I can go on Kaufmann: UNIX is also flexible, I've seen UNIX run w/ newer file systems, and even reflective systems attempted, such as MIT's XOK system it's dependend on C, you are right that's nothing wrong, just a design choice. Down, that's wrong because it makes doing just about everything that is not completely low-level a real pain. I mean, if only the bootstrap code was in C I'd understand it, but this is ridiculous. 12:50pm Kaufmann: Nothing wrong with that since there are high-level derivitives of C that can be applied to UNIX's without issue. C may be low-level, but as a low-level system it is also flexible. There are very few things you cannot do in C if you devote enough time to figuring out how Downix, don't give me C++ (or even ObjC). No matter what you say, the fact remains that all of the kernel and all of the core libraries are still written in C. Downix, high-level reflective languages can be every bit as flexible as C. Kaufmann: depends on the UNIX varient. I've seen small UNIX kernels re-written in such systems as Java and D Flexibility is one thing, the amount of work you pay for constructing what you want is another. Kaufmann: I didn't say they couldn't, I just said that C has something. binEng: I've found C suits my needs fine, of course my needs are small The only thing I code is a terminal daemon -:- mibin [mibin@a-ii1-33.tin.it] has joined #tunes SLIDERS is starting... bbl maybe -:- SignOff Kaufmann: #TUNES (FOO!
